Tolle Lege Institute

Workshop on Reformed Doctrine of Scripture

6 March 2019 | TLI

On Saturday, March 2, Tolle Lege was privileged to host Rev. Dr. Paul C.H. Lim, Associate Professor of the History of Christianity at Vanderbilt University, and Rev. Dr. Gabriel N.E. Fluhrer, Minister of Discipleship at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, SC. Dr. Lim opened his lecture by reminding the audience of how the Latin phrase tolle lege (“take and read”) influenced Augustine’s reading of the Scriptures, his subsequent conversion, and later debates over authority and inspiration in Enlightenment England. His lecture was titled “‘Does God Stutter?’ — Debates on Inspiration & Canon of Scripture in Enlightenment England.” Then Rev. Dr. Fluhrer turned our attention to the American South two centuries later with his lecture, “Scripture with a Southern Accent: Understanding and Applying a Southern Presbyterian’s View of the Bible.”
